  • Chartered on March 16, 1962, the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) was originally known as the College of the Virgin Islands.  This institution was brought to fruition by Act No. 862 of the Fourth Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As a  publicly funded, coeducational, liberal arts institution, UVI’s main objective is to provide for “...the stimulation and utilization of the intellectual resources of the people of the Virgin Islands and the development of a center of higher learning whereby and wherefrom the benefits of culture and education.

  • "It takes a Village to Raise a Child", has always been a most profound proverb close to my heart.  I remember as a child how good life was with such a large extended family.  Never a dull moment with all my aunts, uncles, cousins,  sisters and brothers.  But as an adult, i feel sad at times when i see the drastic difference in how our youth are raised today.

In this day of technology, where everything moves as fast as the speed of light,  we as this "Village" who are intrusted with the raising of these youth should take some time to instill in them what it really means to have a childhood enriched with a such cultural uniqueness.

  • Tourism by far is our # 1 industry that sustains these Virgin Islands.  With this in mind, I feel it is equally important not only to provide tourists with the best shopping experience but also the best hospitality as well.

With improved hospitality, not only will you give tourists a great deal on items but you will keep them coming back for more.  Beacuse truth be told,  A rude sales person is more detrimental to this economy than all the advertising we could ever provide.

  • I encourages everyone particularly young Virgin Islanders and new voters  to get involved in the democratic process. Taking your time to Vote is your way of letting your voice be heard.

So SPEAK OUT by joining a campaign, voulenteering but most of all SPEAK OUT by heading to the poles on election day.  So before November comes around make sure you are registered to vote.

  • When I think of Community, I think first and foremost of our people.  I also think of culture and diversity, elements of this community that makes us who we are.  As a community, I have always found that Virgin Islanders are a proud and helpful people.

In our desire to help there are various programs and organizations geared towards the betterment and progression of this Community and for all their hard work I extend my heartfelt thanks.

Senator Donastorg Arrested PDF Print E-mail

Senator Adlah "Foncie" DonastorgThe news that Senator Donastorg would be arrested on domestic violence charges reached me early yesterday morning.  I wasn't surprised because weeks ago I had hear rumors of an incident involving him and a young woman a while back.  As the day progressed the pending arrest was the topic of discussion in offices across the territory.  The stories I heard were many and varied.  I knew the truth was somewhere in the mix and that eventually we would hear it.  By late afternoon, we learned that Sen. Donastorg had turned himself over to the police on St. Croix, was charged, arrested and eventually released on his own recognizance.

He was charged with assault in the third degree, aggravated assault and battery; brandishing a deadly weapon and using and dangerous weapon.  Wow! I wonder if I would have been released to my own recognizance with that litany of charges.

Reserving Judgment PDF Print E-mail

I’m pretty good at reserving judgment until all the facts of a particular matter is before me. Over the years, I’ve trained myself not to jump on bandwagons. It’s a difficult thing to do, because when one hears something, the natural thing is to form an opinion in your head, even without all the facts. So that is precisely why engaged in this self training to reserve impulse judgment.

Having said that, I’m amazed by the ability of some of us in this community to look at a particular thing or scenario, see and process it, then completely ignore it; all for the sake of some misguided definition of loyalty. I’m referring to the circus that has become known as Mafolie Gate.

When the story initially broke, I thought, because of my self-training, hmmm I wonder what this is about. Then came the news release from Government House saying it was not true that public funds were being spent on renovations at the governor’s private residence. I then thought, okay, maybe the accusations are not true. After all, why would government house send out such a release if the accusations were true. Surely they understood that truth usually bubbles its way to the surface. Maybe not…

Hey everybody,

Sorry I've been away so long.  I really miss you guys and our exchanges on VI politics.  I was absent due to many personal trials over the last few years.  I couldn't dedicate any time to the site, so I thought it was best to shut it down.

Now that there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, I decided to come back to you to share my thoughts on the affairs of the day.  And what a great time to come back; a Virgin Islands election season.  I'm sure there will be unlimited opportunities for me to chime in and pay my 2 cents to the news of the day.

As before, this will be an open space for you to comment and respond.  So please, tell me when you think I'm crazy, tell me when you think I'm right, tell me when you think I'm wrong; just tell me.

You will notice a few changes to VIPolitics.com.  Apart from the obvious layout changes, there are content changes as well.  Please click around and let me know what you like and what you don't like.  We'll be happy to take your recommendations for changes

And so, Ali's back...

The Price of Beauty PDF Print E-mail

What does it cost us to live in the beautiful Virgin Islands? Is there a price? What are we willing to give up for it? How do we preserve it?

All these questions are for each one of us to consider. Personally, I believe the answers to these questions are simple. It all boils down to love, honor and respect.
